LANSING, MI (92 7 WHTC, Dec. 6, 2026) – A look ahead to major construction projects involving trunk roads in Michigan through 2031 is coming into focus.
On Thursday, the State Transportation Commission approved the final version of the Michigan Department of Transportation’s Five-Year Transportation Program. It contains a list of planned work for the MDOT Trunkline Highway Program, as well as information on public transportation, rail, and aeronautics programs, serving as a link between long-range goals/strategies and the programming process. The document spotlights $19.4 billion in anticipated state- and federally-funded investments over that time period, and took into account public comment over a month-long period earlier this summer.
Among the projects listed for the Holland/Zeeland area: Milling and two-course asphalt resurfacing of northbound US-31 from Ransom to Port Sheldon streets, slated for 2028; bank stabilization of westbound Business 196 (Chicago Drive) just east of Waverly Road, slated for next year; deep overlay, along with barrier and partial deck replacement, of the bridge that carries Adams Street over I-196, slated for 2028; and deep overlay, concrete deck patching, and expansion joint replacement of the bridges that carries 60th Street over both US-31 and I-196, slated for 2029-30.
The 2027-2031 Five-Year Transportation Program document is available here. It will be reviewed by state lawmakers next spring as part of the budget-making process.
