SANTA CLARA, CA – The Detroit Lions magical season came to an end Sunday night in San Francisco. A second half let down was their undoing in a 34-31 NFC Championship loss to the 49ers.
Detroit gave up 27 unanswered points to San Francisco after leading at the half 24-7, led by precision passing early in the game by Jared Goff and the running back tandem of Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery.
The second half undoing was triggered by timely scrambling by San Francisco QB Brock Purdy and a stagnate Detroit offense that failed to convert several fourth downs. Detroit went down by 10 points following a final San Fran score with about three minutes left. Detroit managed to score in the final minute to cut the deficit to three but failed to recover an attempted onside kick.
The Lions end their season having snapped three-decade skids without a division title or a playoff victory after earning wins over the Rams and Buccaneers in the previous two weeks, but Detroit remains without a Super Bowl appearance in modern Super Bowl history.
